Real Nappy Week 2012

Well it really crept up on us this year but it nearly upon us happening on 16th and 22nd of April

For those of you who have not heard about Real Nappy Week its a fantastic week when cloth nappies are pushed to the front of the agenda. Many many people and organisations come together to spread the word about real nappies and get more people using the.

The question always is, how to really raise the profile of cloth nappies and get people realising they are not soaking buckets and folding and pinning. But that modern cloth nappies are as simple and easy to use as disposables. They are much much cheaper and in many instances much much better. I can recall countless tales of moms who reached to cloth nappies when they were fed up with the poo explosions up the back.

Here we do many things to promote cloth nappy awareness and real nappy week. One of the most fun things we do is the CAN challenge. Quite simply it challenges people to change 5 bumGenius cloth nappies as quickly as they can. The record time is about 27 seconds. I love doing the can challenge, its sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun. Some people become terrified of hurting the doll and take such care. For others a natural competitive instinct comes out and the poor doll is comatosed {you know who you are!!!}. The Can Challenge website will give you more details on its activities for real nappy week 2012.

So, how would you promote Real Nappies? A random comment below will win 500 fluff points, for our brand spanking new, dedicated to cloth nappies website, fluff heaven.

And the winner is....

Would promote them at playgroups, breastfeeding groups, sling meets, etc. Would also spread the word on Facebook and parenting forums.

I always take my nappies in to work to show them off to my pregnant friends or my friends with babies... I post stuff on my facebook page and just pretty much try and tell all who will listen :)

Hold demonstrations across the UK and have a giveaway at each or a buy one get one free offer as an incentive. I think mums are the best people to show other people about the nappies. I would prefer a mums opinion to a sales person

I promote cloth by showing off my little boys gorgeous fluffy bum at every given opportunity!

I would take my baby armed with a cloth bum (selection of), baby legs and a matching dribble bib if i could get one. We would visit surestart centres, councils (to bring back incentives or start them in areas that don't have them), NHS & NCT antenatal classes. Get them hooked while their still cooking with great fluffy bums. I love cloth and would love to do something with it as a job as it takes passionate people to promote cloth, telling them of the poo explosions that only a cloth nappy could handle. Lets make the world a fluffier place!!!!

It would be great if one of the popular parenting magazines could do a decent article spread across a few pages highligting how easy they are to use, not to mention cute, with all the other pros such as cost and environment friendly explained. They could show some of the popular brands and all the relevant links. So many new mums buy those magazines, cloth nappies would have huge exposure to a massive untapped audience.

Get them in the Bounty Pack - or, better still - in the Mama Pack and link up with NCT to promote them.

I let my boys run trouserless whenever I can to show off their fluff!

being new to fluff, baby is due in 4 weeks id like to take them to shopping centres ect and do a stall to show people how quick, easy and beautiful there babies bums can be xx

Flash the fluff where ever we go :)

I think the biggest myths are the big safety pins and the difficult washing.
Promoting BGs via photos, facebook, public changes etc. can show how easy they really are. Velcro/poppers and a regular washing machine and it's as easy as that!

I generally take my nappies with us where ever we go whether it be, baby clinic, baby groups, MIL's or SIL's whom is expecting her second baby and she seems quite interested in reusable cloth nappies. Already converted OH'S cousin and she is using them for her baby when he gets abit bigger. Love, love, LOVE cloth nappies! xx

I like to show off our nappies as much as possible, so she'll wear dresses and baby legs. I do also walk round the supermarket saying "Ew.. Look at those nasty disposables" :D

I think the antinatal classes and surestart centres could do more to promote cloth. I like the idea of the World record event. The sad thing is to get them more mainstream "celebrity" endorsement is probably needed

I think having photos of babies in real nappies up on the walls in the maternity wards would really get people interested. I know I was always gazing around the room whilst waiting for every appointment, so I'm sure other people do the same.

Get some TV show mummies to use them for the world to see how easy they are to use :)

My baby is 6 months old and we've always used disposable nappies. I've found that they are so expensive and have come round to the idea of using cloth nappies. Would love to try them as they're so much more economical and environmentally friendly x

Get them demonstrated at sure start centres, baby groups, get adverbs in bounty packs! I love talking about mine and when people see my change my bubba there are surprised at just how easy they are! I love seeing babies in them too definitely something that would get people thinking xx

Id love to promote fluff by wearing a special mum size nappy (over jeans ) with a thought provoking fun slogan on the bum, 'ask me about my fluff' ' wearing fluff is allmost as good as being buff' in children's playcentres, sure start centres, baby shows, etc and take a selection of fluff for them to try on dolls ;-) fun but putting across a great message!

I have tried to promote real nappies amongst my friends by keeping a running commentary on how things are going on facebook, lots of pictures etc. But to a wider audience I think it would be helpful to present real, properly calculated case studies of costs in magazines (I have been keeping track of my own and they are definitely much cheaper than disposables). Also better incentives, some councils offer £50 vouchers towards cloth, this should be ALL councils!

Clothe baby in fun nappies and show everyone his bum! And blog about the ease and excitement associated with cloth!

There are not enough places you can actually see fluff before buying, supplies in baby shops and supermarkets seem to be limited to m.io
I always show off my babys fluff with pride :)

just generally talking to everyone about nappies, people are always so shocked that you dont have to soak and that the machine does the work now in washing!
Stacey G. said…
The best way is by not only talking about real nappies but showing people. Let people see what they look like, how they work and ask them questions. Many people seem put off by the washing but its not any more hassle than trailing to the shop for sposies. I just wish cloth nappies were advertised on telly or had better exposure in the media.

by wearing them everyday

By showing people just how easy they are to use...and how cute they look.

Photos of cloth bummed babies in antenatal waiting rooms also road shows and workshops from suppliers at baby shows and in local areas too!! To be honest word of mouth is usually the best advert!!! Caroline mcgrath!

Generally I think celebrity endorsement would be the best publicity on a grand scale, with many mums and mums-to-be reading magazine articles and being inspired by celeb as they may not have family or friends who use cloth.
Personally I try to have Izzys cute nappies on show as often as possible, co-ordinating with outfits; and tell anyone who asks how easy it is and all the benefits! Would like to volunteer to go to pregnancy classes as our mws didnt have a clue about cloth - there are so many cloth lovers out there we could get an army of volunteer demonstraters set up surely! X

I will be promoting real nappies at the nursery which I work at. We will be having cloth nappies in our role play area for the dolls, and a display on a table in reception with lots of cloth nappies, and lots of leaflets and information

Showing as many people as possible what modern cloth nappies are like. So many think disposables are the only option!
Sarah D said…
i usually wait for someone to make a comment - positive or otherwise - about my daughter's nappies (or now cloth training pants) and then i launch into sales mode :D
Elle said…
Antenatal classes, maternity wards, baby clinics etc. But celebrity endorsement by some cool celebrity would be very effective.
Bex said…
I would promote real nappies by organising an event to buy/ sell used ones and have talks and demonstrations. There was not a lot of information available when I was pregnant. Maybe hijak an antenatal class or two as well
Danielle F said…
It would be good if they were promoted in doctors waiting rooms etc, or if midwives promoted them! I wouldn't have found out about them if I hadn't searched out the information! People just think that disposables are the norm and so lots of people don't look into alternatives which is a shame!
wibblywoo said…
Ensuring sure start centre workers know about them, ours didn't, and brushed over reusables and onto disposables where she was much more comfortable to discuss, so maybe send a couple of different types to centres with info, showing how cute they are, easy to use and wash and the savings in the long run.
Maybe even consider putting some trial kits together that parents could hire out like they do with breast pumps, asking for a deposit and for them to pay a small fee for liners and such ?
Chat to other mums at baby groups, show how easy it is to change a reusable nappy, pass them around for others to have a nose at basically what I do already!
jennifer collinson said…
a tv advert. i think it needs to be on tv a lot more, especially for real nappy week
Jaymee-Marie said…
Showcase my lo cloth to everyone and baby groups to talk about real nappies so people were mad aware of how cost effective and easy they are. in todays climate its all about saving money and ease as well as looking good!
Emllyn said…
Put them in the bounty packs along with information leaflets and testimonials from mummies - so people can try and see from themselves how easy it can be and what a difference it can make!
ep0681 said…
Hire packs that are available from midwives. You can hire a birthing pool from the NHS, so there's a precedent. It would be a big outlay of capital to get it started so maybe some of the bigger manufacturers could get together?

Cloth nappies are just so 'hidden'. It feels like a secret society sometimes which is not good for debunking the myth that it's the more difficult choice.

I would do demos in shopping centres where mums have time to look. also try and get a high profile celeb involved to make them seem more trendy and mainstream, everyone has been talking about Beyonce's cool sling lately and celebs being photographed with Bugaboos made them a household name.
Mama Mc said…
Councils need to do more promotion within pregnancy courses, discounts to start buying. Just given 2 old nappies I don't use to an nct ante natal tutor so she can demo them in her classes.
I'd also like to see a country wide council supported charity that sees nappy advisors going round to groups with demos etc, buying schemes that allow mums to buy one at a time, and offering a buy back with second hand scheme so that old fluff can be sold back to the central organisation and then sold onto others.
Amy Truman said…
I would love to set up a Nappy Library as our council don't offer incentives anymore, however, I'm already in the process of setting up a Sling library and I'm heavily pregnant, so trying not to bite of more than I can chew lol
