The Hospital Checklist
Recently more than ever we have been inundated with new mothers asking for advice on what to take with them to the hospital, so I thought I would share this information with all our wonderful followers.
This is an exciting time but we all feel our nerves as we get closer to labour. Making sure you have everything that you may need whilst you are in the hospital can help relieve any stress and make things run a smooter. From my own experience having my hospital bag packed and ready to go from I hit 8 months pregnant really helped to calm me down.

During Labour what will I need?
- TENS machine for early pain relief if you are planning on using one
- An old T-shirt or nightshirt for giving birth
- Socks (in case your feet get cold)
- Snacks and drinks for you and your partner
- Coins, phone card or mobile to announce your news. If you are bringing your mobile don't forget your charger
- Camera with battery charged, memory empty (if digital) or a new film
- Lipbalm
- Watch with a 'second' hand
- Massage oil in case you would like a massage during labour
- Boredom busting items like a magazine, book, game or puzzle book
- Music: try bringing a battery-operated MP3 player and some soothing sounds
During your stay in hospital what will you need?
- Your favourite toiletries and flannel
- Comfortable pyjamas with a front-opening shirt for easy access during breastfeeding
- Dressing gown and slippers
- Towels
- At least 2 nursing bras and breast pads
- Disposable, old or cheap knickers
- A list of numbers you would like to contact with the news
- Something for you to wear to come home in. Keep in mind that your maternity clothes will still fit best and possibly something with a front opening for breastfeeding
What will you need for your baby?
- Newborn nappies and wipes for senstive skin
- Baby clothes, vests (2-3), sleep suits (2-3), cute outfit for photos and a warm going-home outfit
- A baby blanket (if the weather is cold)
- Don't forget your car seat for heading home. If it has a base, make sure that it is properly fitted. We recommend becoming familiar and happy with your car seat, and it fits from you are 8 months pregnant onwards so you are prepared.
Sometimes you will feel like you need all of these things, and it is best to be prepared! but remember that maybe you will use all, maybe you will use none. It all depends on your labour and every labour is different.
Everyone from Baba Me wishes all our new mums health and happiness throughout pregnancy and motherhood, and if you have any questions or suggestions that you would like us to pass on please let us know.
