Five years ago...

Five years ago two incredible things happened to the Baba Me household, and they share a birthday.

Firstly our fourth, and final, baby Feidhelm was born, aka Mr Duracell. {So named because his internal batteries never ever ever run out! I always maintain if he had been our first child, we would only have had one!}.

This week we have been planning for his 5th Birthday party on Saturday. I realised that Mr Duracell was not the most reliable source of class names when we came to the fourth Lucy {in a small country school of less than 20 children!}. He also told me there was an orange Rachel and a bold Rachel in his class. I just got the class list, no Rachel at all!!! This should be fun.

On the day he came home from hospital, we were straight back at work. Back then it was just me and Pete, and quite frankly maternity leave was just not an option. When we arrived at work the parcel I had been waiting on from America had arrived. It was brand new nappies from Cotton Babies called the bumGenius. They had launched in America in December, but these were the first ones to hit Europe. Immediately {as all true fluffheads know!}, the cloth nappies were whipped out and on to his bum. Yes I know I lecture all the moms who buy from us about pre washing... but.... well you know.... They fitted his three day old bum perfectly. Amazing. More amazingly they also fitted his 22 month old brother perfectly as well.

WOW. WOW. WOW. I was in awe. Nothing like these had ever been around. The market for cloth nappies then was HUGE, and I mean HUGE two piece systems or sized pocket nappies. The pocket nappies were slim but were sized, not great with breastfed poo and expensive so not making huge grounds. Cloth nappies were a niche, only for the die hard fans and I truly believe if it was not for bumGenius shaking up and completely changing the market – they may have remained so.

I was determined to find fault, nothing could be this good, surely?.... I threw everything at them. The very clever Jenn and her team at Cotton Babies knew what they were doing. Jenn had been selling nappies for a number of years before this, and it was very clear she knew her fluff. They passed every test I could think off. Being onesize, they just made so much sense and made my life so much easier.

I knew instantly that these new nappies were going to be a hit, a huge hit. These nappies, were quite simply, revolutionary and market changing. Its no exaggeration to say that modern cloth nappies owe a huge deal to this design. I struggle to think of any cloth nappy launched since then which has not 'taken elements' from bumGenius.

Roll forward five years, and we are now on v.4 bumgenius. Baba me has grown from me & Pete to a wonderful team of 18, Mr Duracell started school in September, and the Baba Me days of changing nappies are long over. I still love working with Jenn and the Cotton Babies team. Jenn is simply amazing, not resting on her laurels she has since gone on to launch another revolutionary cloth nappy system – Flip. You can read all about the growth of bumgenius in her own words.

BumGenius and Mr Duracell birthday parties are this Saturday. The bumGenius one is being held in the new Baba Me baby shop in Newry and promises to be a fun packed day. Free bumGenius will be given to the first 5 people through the door and lots lots more.

But, our online fans want to celebrate as well so there will be some special things happening online. To kick off with we are giving away some free bumgenius nappies to random comments below, just tell us what amazing things have happened in the last five years for you.

Having 3 beautiful boys and a husband recovering from Sarcoidosis - a nasty illness. I'm just blessed I have wonderful people in my life despite a series of illnesses and deaths in the family. Appreciate what you have. Oh, the fact that my husband is so cool with me spending £££s on fluffy goods - he's an addict too!

The most amazing things that have happened to me in the last five years has to be the birth of my two boys, now 3 years and 14 months old. They bring me so much joy along with the sleep deprivation of course!! My youngest is a nightmare already...just found him standing up on the TV stand to reach the stereo!!

Happy Birthday to BG and Mr Duracell :-)

Five years ago I moved in to my home with my lovely then boyfriend. The house was seriously ready for some work! It was last decorated in the 70's and so the hard work started!

Two days after getting the keys my boyfriend proposed - not romantic at all but thats just him and I wouldn't change him for the world.

The wedding was planned and the house was slowly, room by room, replastered and painted and furnished. Three years ago we got married, it was such an amazing day.

We came back from our honeymoon to find out my Mum had breast cancer. A dark cloud came over all of us, but my hubby instead of hgetting down arranged a sponsered head shave. We raised £1000 and lots of spirits!

From that day we agreed its about time to have kids and 18months later along came the light of our life! Our little girl was born, one of her middle names is Joan after har Grandma and she is just as stubborn!

Today as I look at my Mum teaching my little girl to say DaDa, I know every bit of hard times were worth it just to see my Mum enjoying her first Granddaughter. My Mum is fine, you wouldn't know that she is recovering from cancer.

Next month my little lady starts nursery and we are so proud that she will be waddling in her little BumGenius nappies.

Lets hope the next five years will be as fun but maybe a little less eventful!

5 years already! I'm in denial that my little girl is 18 months old tomorrow and my little boy is 4 months old this month!

The last five years for me have been inspiringly life changing. Five years ago I'd just commuted back to home after suffering abuse from my then partner. That February I met my beautiful Fiancé and my life has just got better since that day.

The most awe-inspiring thing that has happened to me is that we created these two beautiful children, we have our Caitlyn Rose and our Alden Hugh and we were both contemplating how complete our small lives are now we have these little people within them :) We try our best by them everyday and it's been an amazing discovery learning how to parent. The eco way of life is definitely for us and we take pride in raising our children the way that we are :)

We became engaged and now booked in to marry on the 14th January 2012.

Happy 5th Birthday to BG and Mr.Duracell! Love from us!

I have discovered firsthand the joys of homebirth, waterbirth, breastfeeding, cloth bums, babywearing, Baby Led Weaning and instinctive parenthood...... and am sooooo excited about what the next 5 years could hold for my family!!!
Thank you so much for this competition..... writing all that down has made me realise just how incredibly lucky I am.... xxx I hope you have a fabulous time celebrating your 2 special 5th birthdays!!

5 years ago, my mum would joke about me making her a Grandmum and I'd chuckle as children weren't in the forseeable future. After falling in love and spending a year living apart and only seeing each other at weekends I made the move to Sheffield, 150miles away from my family. A month after moving in we found out I was pregnant, it was a shock to say the least. We then had to find somewhere else to live as we'd moved to a 6th floor, 1 bed apartment. Six months later we moved into somewhere bigger and a week after moving in I was admitted to hospital and Chloe was born a few days later, nearly 2 months early. I had never thought of having a baby, let alone a tiny 2lb 8oz premature baby! she spent the next month in special care and then was home. She's now nearly 14 months old and I couldnt imagine our life without her, she is our sunshine everyday and we are blessed to have her.

It's been a busy 5 years, falling in love, loving away from my family, moving house again, having a baby, but we wouldn't change it, everything happens for a reason and I'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

Birthday wishes to Mr Duracell on his special day, try not to wear mummy and daddy out too much!!

Hugs from Chloe and Michelle xx

Five years ago we were told we couldn't have children and after 3 cycles of IVF we finally have our little boy. He wears Bumgenius V3, we bought lots of other fancy nappies but none are as reliable as BG.

In the last 5 years I've had 2 gorgeous children!! Wanted to use cloth nappies from day 1 but didn't think there was much choice with Poppy my 3 1/2 year old, we used pre-folds but found the too bulky so gave up after about 3 months :( This time we are using Bumgenius and Otis (9 mnths) has been using them every day. They are Brilliant!!

5 years ago on Saturday I celebrated my 31st birthday, my first as a Mamma.

Since then I have done 5 more IVF cycles, gotten pregnant 3 times, taken home one baby, sold 2 houses, bought 5 acres of land, applied for and got planning permission and by Saturday will have walls up to at least the 1st floor level.

Who knows what the next 5 years will bring?

And now for my confession... I don't like bumgenius one size. I am a two piece girl ;)

Five years ago I was just moving back to the UK to buy a flat with my boyfriend and set up home over here. I was also looking for a career change as I hated my job in sales.

Since then I have retrained as a teacher, working with 16-19 year olds. Once I'd been doing this for a few years we decided to try for children and 15 months ago my first son was born.

I'm now 5 months pregnant with our second child and looking forward to taking time out from my job to be a full time mum.

Happy birthday to BG & your son!

In the past 5 years, we went from being newlyweds, to being parents of two little girls (now 2 and 4 months). I didn't think I'd be a cloth diaper mama, but I am and love it! And although I know we should wash the diapers first, Baby M has a brand new BumGenius 4.0 on today that came straight out of the package this morning. ;) Zinnia sure looks good on her bum!

I married my husband 6 years ago and the most amazing that happened to me is that he stuck around even though I kept pushing off being intimate with him and now we are expecting our first little girl in May. Amazing.
I am not sure if this is open to the USA or not, but in case it is, here it goes:
I gave birth to both my boys in the past 5 years! My eldest will turn 3 in 2 days Yikes! I started cloth diapering him when he was 1 and now cloth diaper them both.
THanks for the chance.

Hmm something amazing that has happened to me. I am pregnant with my first baby so I have nothing really cloth diaper related to say is amazing yet *although I am super excited to get my diaper stash stocked and ready for LO to get here*

My dad however, was diagnosed with Lymphoma almost 3 years ago. After the doctors told him he was in remission he sneezed and broke a rib. More problems surfaced and things simply got worse. After being misdiagnosed twice (both times they thought it was lymphoma and refused to say it was anything else) and treating him for the wrong cancer. He went to another doctor and was very quickly after that diagnosed with Myeloma. This is a cancer of the bone marrow. It literally causes the bones to turn into swiss cheese with holes all over. He went from stage 4 (all forms of this cancer are considered stage 4) in the worst category of stage four to remission. He is a walking miracle according to the doctors and seeing him go from not being able to get in and out of a chair to nailing up walls in an addition is nothing short of such.

This is what was amazing that happened to me in the last few years. I got to experience a true miracle. And my dad got to walk me down the isle as I was marrying the man of my dreams. And he will get to hold his grandson in 3 months!

Congratulations on your double "Birthday." Especially Happy Birthday to Mr. Duracell. Five years old is an exciting age to be. Have a great Birthday!!!

BumGenius means a lot to me. Observing the growth and exciting changes in cloth diapering has been very close to my heart. I am a grandmother that has enjoyed diapering my grandchildren with BumGenius diapers. As a young mother I also cloth diapered my four children.

Happy Birthday to "BumGenius" and Happy Birthday to "Baba Me."

In the last five years I have done things that I have found to be amazing. I have visited a total of 6 new countries outside of the US. I got back in touch with an old friend whom I had met when I was 13 and we got married a year ago the 20th of this month in February.

We have enjoyed an amazing first year of marriage, and have found out that we are expecting our 1st this upcoming June. Although we have had an amazing time these last 5 years, I know that these next 5 years are going to be even more amazing as our family grows and we begin our journey in the wonderful world of Cloth Diapering!!

Whether I am the one picked or not thank you so much for what you do and the wonderful opportunity!

t seems 5 years is a long time for things to happen!
in my 5 years i met my husband (2005) we got married in 2008, a month after the wedding we found out i was expecting what was to become our very own Mr Duracell my life how hard are they!! 4 days after that we found out my husband had cancer, 4 months of gruelling chemo and him stealing all the pregnancy symptoms he was given the all clear! Our little boy was born May 2009, my nan sadly passed away in June 2009 but she did get to meet our little boy, we moved house April 2010, a week after our son's first birthday my husbands mum died, she was given 2-3 months (cancer again) but she only lasted 3 weeks. the night before her funeral we found out i was expecting again with Mrs hopefully cheap and cheerful run flat quick batteries due any day! it has been a rollercoaster and a hell of a lot to cope with in such a short space of time but we are really happy together and although our little Duracell bunny doesn't stop he is the happiest boy in town! we love our fluffy bums and just wish we could come and join the party on saturday!! x

Wow 5 years! I love Bumgenius nappies but didn't know much about the history of them (or modern cloth nappies in general).

Well the best thing to happen to me in the last 5 years was becoming a mum to my gorgeous daughter and of course meeting my fabulous other half. We have also adopted two amazing cats in need of a loving home who love our daughter and make her giggle. My partner and I both had big changes to our careers in the last 5 years. He was made redundant (as a result of the credit crunch) and took the opportunity to become self-employed and is making a success of his new job, which I am incredibly proud of him for. I was disillusioned with my career as a scientist and applying for jobs mainly outside of science. However, I did apply for a couple within science including a 1 year post in the field of HIV medicine, intending to use the job to "tie me over" financially and continue looking for a new job. Well 5 years later I am still working on HIV (this time with a permanant post)! I discovered that I didn't in fact hate working in science, just the job I had at that time and I love working in my current field (which I find so much more rewarding than my old job).

In the next 5 years I would like for us to become financially stable enough to buy a place to live (we are in a tiny London rented flat) so we have permanant roots as a family. It would also be lovely if we were able to find some time (and money) to get married. But if we can't manage the latter it won't matter to me as long as we have our health and happiness and hopefully we would like to be blessed with a second little bubbie that we can cloth-bum too!

The last 5 years has seen me get engaged, get married (in Vegas !), decide to move from Scotland to Northern Ireland and leave all my family behind, delay said move due to Mum having breast cancer, go ahead with the move once she successfully battled it !, have an ectopic pregnancy then spend the next 2 years failing miserably to conceive and be referred for IVF, fall pregnant naturally when waiting for IVF appointment ! We have moved home countless times in 5 years but have now just purchased the house we have rented for the past year. The first house and not apartment we have ever lived in and its now ours :-) our baby is now 8 months old and we are thinking about number 2. We are approaching our 4th wedding anniversary which will also be our 8th anniversary together. The last 5 years has been filled with ups and downs but we are ready to see what the next 5 bring :-)

We have a Mr Duracell too in the form of our 3 year old : ) Happy birthday to yours xx
The last 5 years have been crazy! I was working 2 jobs until I fell pregnant with my miracle baby (who I was told I would need fertility treatment for)! Found out the day after we got home from our delayed honeymoon in Florida, where I had gone on many a roller coaster and also swam with Sea Manatees!
I gave birth to my eldest nearly 4 years ago, had to go back work full time, sometimes working 7 days a week so we could save up for our own home! I did this until I was 7 months pregnant with my second miracle baby! We finally raised a deposit after much blood and sweat and trying to hide my baby bump from the mortgage company at every meeting was very hard as I knew they would turn us down! So after years of hard slog we finally brought a house! I gave birth to my youngest last year and while I was still in hospital my husband then went and picked the keys up! So in 2 days I had a baby and brought my first house! I also took exams 6 weeks after as I had been redoing my maths at night school! crazy few years

The past five years have had many ups and downs but the amazing things to come out of it are my 2 beautiful boys. They both had a pretty tough start as they were premature so from the beginning were jabbed with needles daily and wired up to many monitors and machines 24/7. My now 2 year old was born at 32 weeks weighing 3lb 05oz he finally came home from hospital only 3 weeks later weighing 4lb, it felt like much longer at the time!! My youngest (now 1) was born at 34 weeks weighing 3lb 11oz he came home from NICU after just 2 weeks, he's a tough cookie. It was the hardest thing in the world going home leaving my babys in the hospital, it felt unnatural. Having said that I know I am truly blessed and very lucky to have my happy, healthy children, I would move heaven and earth for them if I could. Being a mum is the best feeling in the world and they will always be the best thing to ever happen to me. They have both been in cloth for just over a year now and I'm proud to say 99% of our stash is solely bg. They are a perfect fit for both of them and the prints are the best on the market, by far. Wishing Mr Duracell and Bumgenius a happy birthday 😄

Oh this is exciting! My partner and I decided to take the plunge and move to Australia. I made some fantastic life long friends and then went on to make a beautiful baby! I discovered the world of carrying your baby and cloth nappies. I loved it all. We came home in August and it's been a whirlwind of meeting family and friends all over the place. We are finally getting settled back down and back in full time cloth as I struggled to keep it up with all the moving. I am looking forward to a more relaxed next few months!

In the last 5 years...I have got married, I have been diagnosed with severe endometriosis, I have had several ops, I have had 4 miscarriages and been blessed with a miracle son who was tiny on arrival at 4.9lbs! He is still diddy but blessing my life greatly! He has worn cloth nappies since he was 2 months old and elementals do fit his skinny thighs which is amazing as most don't! Despite being small he is a heavy wetter too! I can't believe how much my life has changed in 5 years and I am so thankful! The last year has been one full of downs too - losing one of my good friends in a car accident and she left behind two gorgeous young children. However makes me more determined to enjoy life to the full with my little boy xx

It's been a busy five years. My boyfriend and I bought a house, got engaged, got married, got pregnant and found bumgenius, had a baby, then my husband broke his collar bone.
Last month we celebrated our sons first birthday and couldn't be happier.
Love our little family and bumgenius! x
