International Day of the Family

The main focus of this week has of course been Real Nappy Week but today is a very special day! It is the International Day of the Family, a time to celebrate all the great things about your family and how much you love them.

What is the modern family? There is no longer the traditional nuclear family. We no longer have the support network of generations of experience all living under one roof. Instead today we have the freedom to choose who we love, who we stay with and how we raise our family. This in turn makes every family completely different to the traditional family and it has it ups and downs.

Not as many people today are getting married, more are getting divorced, IVF is making it possible for those who previously couldnt conceive to do so and there are many many more situations that encompass the modern family. AND EACH OF THEM ARE BRILLIANT IN THEIR OWN RIGHT!

Many gay couples are now able to have the family that they have always dreamed of, take Elton John and his partner David Furnish who now have there brand new baby through a surrogate mother.

All new families need the support of others with experience and those of us who have missed out on the experience of our own elder generations are now turning to the fabulous world of the Internet. There are forums and chat rooms that can help with every aspect of parenthood from the obscure to the norm and no one will ever judge you.

Whatever your family situation there are hardships and good times but today is all about celebrating the good times, whether your family has still got the traditional ties or you are using more modern means. Life is good when you have your family and what better way to say I love you than to spend some time together.
